Chapter 4: Time to Play Catch-Up

In the weeks that followed their first dinner, Vanessa and John became an inseparable pair. Each day, it seemed, had been filled with a dozen new adventures between the two of them. Since his return, John had been stationed as a recruiter and had taken up residence off-base; mostly at Vanessa's house.

Vanessa had never had problems keeping up with her work, but she had found she'd been neglecting her friendship with Roger. One day, she called John and told him that she was going to take Roger out to lunch. John, who was busy anyway, gave her his good word and said he'd meet with her later. With a bounce in her step, Vanessa walked down to Roger's office to rescue him from paperwork.

When Roger saw Vanessa at his door, he let out a great big sigh accompanied by an even greater smile.

“You exist!” he exclaimed, “I was beginning to think that I'd completely imagined you!”

Vanessa smiled back and hugged him when he approached.

“Yes,” she said, “I still exist. Just... been busy.”

Roger playfully tugged on Vanessa's bag.

“Busy, huh?” he asked.

Vanessa only nodded as they walked arm in arm out to her car. They were mostly quiet, besides small talk, until they were seated at a table in their favorite diner.

Roger busied himself with his napkin while Vanessa tried not to look at her phone. It was a rule of theirs. When they got to the table, they both put their phones in the middle. The first one to pick up their phone and check it had to also pick up the tab. It worked well for Vanessa, because normally Roger got antsy first. This time, however, it was she who kept nervously glancing at the shiny black communication device.

Roger didn't hesitate for a moment. It was his first time seeing Vanessa agitated, and he was going to take full advantage of it.

“So,” he said, “you do realize that you're almost a completely different person now, right?”

It took all Vanessa had to control the instantaneous rage his comment elicited. But she succeeded, and instead managed a tight smile.

“What do you mean, Roger? I'm exactly the same as I've always been. Maybe you're just seeing me different is all,” she responded.

Roger shook his head.

“No,” he said, “you're different. For example, how much does it hurt right now that your phone isn't in your hand?”

Vanessa didn't answer. True to their sibling-like relationship, Roger was starting to annoy her. When he noticed, he only got more brazen. Vanessa tried to look at other things, but she knew that her little twit friend was on to something. When she didn't respond, Roger continued.

“Seriously,” he said, “This new guy you're with... he's not like the last one. Or the one before that. This guy, what's his name, John? Well, John's got you wrapped around his finger. What are you, in love, or something?”

The waitress had just approached their table and was setting glasses of soda down in front of them. It was the only thing that kept Roger's nose aligned with his face.
